a closer look
Above, a couple of side views of the marker (SL, TD).

The marker was designed by Karia Dibert (SPT) and Steve Jungst (BICEP), and machined by Steve Jungst. The design is representative of and inspired by the things that make the station run: power, water, sewer, glycol, satellite, fuel, and people. The marker is hexagonal with an ice crystal in the center, with the 42 community members symbolized by a surrounding mosaic of 42 different blocks, all supported by a base of engravings that depict critical resources. The idea is to celebrate the community and the infrastructure that allows us to live here.

I heard back from Steve Jungst, who graciously provided the photos below depicting the fabrication steps. He said that Chris Ray helped with machining and that Terrance McGovern helped with anodizing (!) Thanks!
