Garriott spent 60 days in space aboard NASA's SKYLAB III mission in 1973, as well as ten days aboard Spacelab-1 in 1983. He was visiting Pole in January 1988 as a member of a meteorite collection project--one of 3 such trips he'd make to the ice. This 2005 photo was shared to the USAP photo library by Will Silva. U.S. astronaut Owen Garriott, a crew member on board SkyLab II in 1973, left a note at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station when he visited in January 1998. One of the science buildings at the South Pole at that time was also named SkyLab, thus his note is amusing: "Hello to the Skylab Veterans! from an earlier version -- Owen Garriott, Skylab II, 1973 (Now 1/15/98)."
